Abstract
GIS modeling for best sites for agricultural development in south Eastern Desert, Egypt

Abstract
Remotely sensed data and Geographic Information System are effective tools for monitoring the land use of different terrains. Using satellite data, different thematic maps have been produced by visual and digital interpretation of satellite images for the Gabal Elba area, south Eastern Desert, Egypt. Topographic contour maps have been used for building Triangulation Integrated Network maps (TIN) for the area under investigation, as well as for creating the slope map. All the produced maps are then subjected to transformation into digital format to establish a digital database for the area. These maps, in digital format, have been used as different layers at different levels for building a GIS model. Different interrelated maps have been used as layers affecting the suitability of the different parts of the area for agriculture development. The chosen layer maps are drainage network density, structure lineament density, surficial deposits (soil) type, terrain slope, and availability of ground water supply. All and every layer of these maps is combined together with a weight of unity first yielding an output. Different layers have been given different weights, based on their contribution in the specific land use types. The model then produces accurate and reasonable outputs. At last, the model output provides the most suitable sites for the desired type of land use, as in our case, for agricultural development.
