Abstract
During the last decade, the geospatial community has experienced rapid development in the methodologies used to acquire spatial data. This often leaves the end user community at a loss when deciding which approach to choose for their survey. In many cases vendors often suggest several options to the end user to accomplish the same job. This is often done to inform the end user of the various methodologies that are available and to present the advantages of one option over another. It is important that the end user has the pertinent information to make informed decisions.
Current collection methodologies include, but are not limited to: ground survey, aerial photography, LiDAR and satellite imagery collection. Before choosing the right tool for the job, several questions must be answered. These include project requirement, accuracy, time frame, project size, final deliverables and budget. Keeping these questions in mind, this paper takes a practical look at several projects and discusses the various methodologies available to the end user. Discussing the key objectives of the projects will allow recommendations to be made on the optimum methodology to be employed.
