Abstract
The Determination of Desert Area in the Southern Part of Iran by Using GIS

The desert ecosystem is very complex. The opinion scientist and specialist are different. The scientists of different sciences have different ideas about desert. The index of desert definition is undetermined in Iran. The desert boundary with undesert land use is not accurate The majority of opinion is based on climatologic. Although, the integrated definition of desert does not exists that is accepted by a lot of specialist. By climatologic opinion the temperature and precipitation as the two main factor of desert index. The desert investigation is not based on one integral idea. Also the characteristics of desert to non-desert area have not changed suddenly, they have changed as a bound that has spread in the region. This region has characteristics of desert and non-desert area. The present research is determination of boundary of desert in Hormozgan by using GIS. This research has used the total of factors and criteria. The maps are prepared in the total area of Hormozgan with area about 68000 km2. The area is located in longitude 52º, 41` to 59º, 15' E and altitude25º', 34’to 28º, 57’ N in the south of Iran in the Hormozgan province. These maps consist of Geology, Geomorphology, Pedology, Climatologic, Hydrology, and vegetation. These factors are investigated by preparing map in GIS. . The maps are produced separately and overlay to each other when they are investigated. In this research the climatologic desert maps are produced. The climatologic maps are concluded from climate, vegetation, and Geology desert criteria. The desert area is determined by some index for every factor such as geology and climatologic and so on. The desert area is determined by investigation of Geology, Geomorphology, Pedology, Climatologic and vegetation. The desert area is equal to 36571.8 km2,11696, 66277,67760.9 and 64583 km2 respectively The actual desert map is produced from combining and overlaying of six criteria maps. The five maps are overlaid to each other and they have 0.22 percent with area about 18.8 km2. The final map was produced for desert area of Hormozgan province.
