Land use change may influence many natural phenomena and ecological processes, including runoff, soil erosion and also soil conditions. In this study that was carried in Lajimrood Drainage Basin in northern parts of Iran with an area about 14080 hectares, combination of socio-economic and physical parameters have caused land use change. To accomplish integrated watershed management and land use planning for managers, it is necessary to study dynamic spatial pattern and distribution of land use and land use changes related to socio-economic and physical parameters. Most of changes in the study area were forest - arable land transformation. Only this transformation was considered in this study. In this paper the effect of physical factors including elevation above sea level, slope and geographical aspect on changing of land use was investigated. To meet this aim, at first, based on aerial photos and 1:25000 digital maps dating 1967 and 1994, the land use maps in these two years was prepared. Results have shown that the area with forest land use was decreased about 7.01 percent in transition 1967 – 1994. Also land use of arable land was increased about 3.05 percent. By means of comparing, land use change map from forest to arable land was obtained. Then digital elevation model (DEM) having a spatial resolution of 30 meters was produced. Based on the digital elevation model, the maps of elevation, slope and aspect of Vastan Drainage Basin were obtained and classified. These maps were crossed with land use change map. The results have shown that elevation and slope are physical effective factors in land use change. Keyword: land use change, spatial distribution, digital elevation model
