Considerations for designing spatial data for a multi-purpose GIS system

Abstract
Achieving an efficient spatial data design for a corporate GIS system is a challenging task. The diversity of user needs and applications requirements implies the need to consider many determining factors on the decision to adopt a data model, data structure and data quality of the required spatial database. Established in 2003, the UAE National Topographic Database (NTDB) was designed and implemented with the strategic goal in mind to provide efficient foundation for a national GIS data infrastructure. This presentation will shed the light on the approach adopted for the implementation of the UAE NTDB and the main factors of impact considered during the design phase.
