Abstract
The rising population of our country even after breaking the record of 1 billion in the millennium year is at the same increasing rate. Man feels the effect of this alarming population explosion when he steps out of his home. Traffic congestion spoils the fun of driving, whether you are just going out for a ride in the countryside, commuting to work or simply returning home in the evening. Indian motorists are forced suffer some awful traffic conditions.
The vexed question of road congestion in town may in part be rescued by the application of Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS). The function of ATIS is to assist the travelers with planning, perception, analysis and decision making to improve the convenience and efficiency of travel. ATIS technologies include:
- On-board display of maps and road way signs.
- On-board route guidance systems
- On-board traffic hazard warning system.
This project aims in providing a smooth flow of traffic by developing an Advance Traveller Information System using GIS. This provide drivers with information and congestion, alternate routes, to find the closest facility, to find the optimum route between many points, to find the most direct path between two points, to build service areas, to find out drive time analysis, to find out the actual location and status of the vehicle and roadway condition through audio and visual means in the vehicle.
Apart from this a Geo-referenced base map is developed for Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) for this study area. The study areas chosen were Chepauk and Triplicane zones in Chennai City, TamilNadu state, India. The orthophotos in the scale of 1:3000 is used for the study purpose. The same project has been proposed to the Government of TamilNadu for successful implementation. The fruitfulness of our project will be the great quantum of save in time and energy conception of human labourers and the experience of peaceful and tension free ride by the travelers.
