Abstract
Geotechnical investigations are required for design and approval of major construction projects as the soil profile plays an important role both in the initial stages and during construction. Large volumes of geotechnical data have been collected over the years by various Government organizations of Singapore like Housing Development Board (HDB), Building Construction Authority (BCA), Jurong Town Council (JTC) and Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the construction industry of Singapore. However, the data are not placed in a convenient frame work so that others could make use of it. An Internet based Geotechnical Information System (GeoInfoSys) was developed based on the integration of Internet Geographic Information System (GIS), Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) and Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) data structure to efficiently store, organize and web disseminate geotechnical information. The system provides easy to use functions to locate and purchase boreholes of interest, to view on-the-fly generated bore logs, to view cross sections and to down load on-the-fly generated AGS files.
