Spatial Analysis of Governmental Services in Arafat

Abstract Today's Hajj (Islamic pilgrimage) witnesses a tremendous increase in number of pilgrims, around three millions. Pilgrims must stay in Arafat area during the 9th day of Thul Hijjah (the last month of the lunar calendar) as part of Hajj rituals. Arafat is located near by the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Urban space utilization in Arafat area is a major concern for urban designers and planners. This utilization is essential to accommodate this huge number of people and provide them with adequate services. In addition, Arafat limited space makes is a prime location for space utilization.
This paper demonstrates a GIS-based spatial analysis of governmental services within Arafat area. This analysis aims to: first, calculate the land area used by different local authorities providing services during Hajj; Second, analyzing the spatial distribution of these services. GIS is utilized in this study for area calculation and location analysis of each governmental service. A geoprocessing model has been developed to perform area calculations of theses services. This model follows a designed approach for area estimations and comparisons. GIS is also used to perform spatial distribution analysis of these services according to their current locations.
The paper concludes with facts about the space use and distribution of governmental services in Arafat. Based on the GIS analysis performed through this research, the paper also discusses some suggestions for better space utilization and better spatial distribution of these services.
