Ghareeb Director of Al Ain Town Planning, Al Ain Town Planning Department, UAE Abstract Al Ain Town Planning Department (AATPD) has initiated its first steps toward the establishment of a GIS since the early 80's of the 20th century. It has prepared a geodetic network for the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi Emirate, converted the whole maps to digital format and collected a sets of Aerial and digital satellite images. The Centre of Data Management System (CDMS) which was established to manage and to upgrade all the geospatial data has introduced the use of GIS application through a pilot project of automated site plane. This paper will explore the AATPD experience in building its own Geospatial information system and its current application in the preparation of the Master Plan and transportation studies for Al Ain city and its region up to 2015. The paper will also give a look at the AATPD current effort toward the establishment of a real and proper Planning Support System by using GIS applications e.g. the projects of creation of a GIS centre, the aerial photography and upgrading of the digital maps.
