Urban Sprawls Studies Using Multi-Temporal Satellite Imageries and GIS (Case Study East Azerbaijan Cities)

Population increase as well as Immigration from rural area towards larger cities, particularly in developing countries results considerable increase in urban area. Such an unplanned urban growth results to agricultural development as well as environmental pollution. Major cities in Eastern Azerbaijan province are selected to run this study during 1976-2000. Landsat images of three different periods were analyzed to evaluate urban growth rate. Analysis of The obtained results disclosed that in some cases urban fringe has been expanded over four times.KEY WORDS:Spatial development; evaluation; multi-temporal satellite imageries; geographic information systems
