Industrial Resiting In View Of Impending Urban Sprawl -A Case of EIA of Industrial Estates of Hyderabad.

Cities which nurture slowly and steadily initially often intensify rapidly into pockets of rapid growth due to increase in urban economic base spearheaded by industrial growth - a source for vast tertiary sector. In the process, cities sprawl cutting a cross various landuse/landcover categories, showing a clear impact on environment. This is often aided by ineffective and inept planning of government bodies.
Hyderabad metropolitan region is one of the fastest growing metropolis in Indian subcontinent with a shift from a traditional commercial centre to a modern information technology centre. This continuing journey of four centuries old traditional Hyderabad to IT hub – Cyberabad, is remarkable. The industrial pockets get squeezed in between the building activity there by becoming instrumental in resource depletion of the region. Considering the present status of couple of industries it is overwhelmingly felt that urban renewal process has to take in to account the present location of industrial sites.
The study undertaken for industrial estates of Sanathnagar and Kukatpally, clearly depict a change over from within residential colonies to more open environment. The study was feasible through spatial temporal mapping of sprawl with the aid of toposheets (56) k/7 series along with IRS ID LISS III and PAN data supported by feel data of impact analysis of surface and groundwater.The city sprawl is studied through Shanon’s Entropy technique which suggests whether the urban growth is compact or dispersed in the light of urban population growth. Once the growth pattern is identified and land use changes are studied, water based environmental impact assessment is carried for the two industrial estates of the study region.
